As Catechists, it is our task to help those we catechize learn how they can flesh out and practice those works of mercy in their daily lives…
This workshop will explore practical ways and resources to make these works of mercy more than a list to memorize, but actions which make our faith come alive and serve the real needs of those around us.

The program for the day will consist of the two themes for the year of mercy:  The God of Mercy and People of Mercy.  The morning session will focus on one’s personal understanding of God’s Mercy through the Word of God (scripture), Pope Francis writings, and other pertinent authors.   The quiet reflection time will allow for personal integration of the content by each participant.
The afternoon session will illustrate how we are people of mercy by using the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. This will include scripture for each work of mercy, a prayer, and questions for reflection along with practical ways of living the work of mercy in our daily life.     What are some ways to share these Works of Mercy with your students and parents?  The day will consist of presentations, personal reflection, prayer, and sharing with one another.

Presenters:
Sister Betty Drewes is a member of the Sisters of Saint Benedict, Ferdinand, IN and is involved with the Spirituality Ministry.  She is Director of the Kordes Center and Coordinator of Hospitality, and serves as a spiritual director.  She leads retreats, days of reflection, and various personal growth programs.  Among her prior ministries she was on the Ferdinand Benedictine leadership team, director of ongoing formation, and director of spirituality for the Benedict Inn Retreat Center in Beech Grove, Indiana. Sister Betty has professional degrees in education, counseling, and spirituality.
Sister Jane Will is a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict, Ferdinand, IN. She serves on the community’s Spirituality Ministry team as Program Director. She is also director of Strategic Planning for her community.  She has a doctorate in psychology and she is a licensed clinical psychologist, spiritual director, and presenter of workshops and retreats. She is a licensed life teacher and has taught on the junior high to college level.  She has also served as formation director for postulants and novices and as subprioress in her community.

This is a two-session program for those preparing to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in their parishes/schools, as well as those who are presently serving in this role but have not attended this program in the past. Each two-hour session will include the Theology of the Eucharist, Liturgical Ministry and the Practical Aspects of the Role of the Communion Minister. This formation program will fulfill the training portion of the canonical mandate required for Extraordinary Ministers.

Sacrament preparation involves both helping people to understand the value of the gift God offers and how to open themselves to receive the gift.  This workshop will explore how to communicate the Church’s teaching on sacraments in light of the new evangelization.  It will provide practical insights for guiding children and their families to ongoing conversion nurtured by a full sacramental life.

Presenter: Dr. Jo Ann Paradise is a National Consultant for Our Sunday Visitor Curriculum Division and works with the product development team in creating resources for children and their families.  Jo Ann has served as catechetical leader in the Diocese of Pittsburgh for over 32 years.  A teacher at both the grade school and high school levels in Catholic schools as well as an adjunct faculty member of several universities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jo Ann gives keynotes and workshops at diocesan conferences throughout the United States and Canada.  Through her stories, Jo Ann motivates educators and catechists to prepare children to meet the risen Lord and then learn how to respond to his invitation through a life of discipleship.  She is a popular retreat director and provides spiritual direction.  Jo Ann lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband Don and extended family.

We are surrounded by a violent culture that is deeply affecting the thoughts and actions of school-aged youth.  As Catholics we need to present a joy-filled way to live as a sign of hope and love.  Using the writings and spirituality of Thomas Merton, a man in the world but not of it (John 17: 14-16), this session will offer foundational concepts for creating an educational environment established upon charity.  This session will offer ideas for more collaborative student activities, engagement in class prayer, and activities that will challenge students to recognize and acknowledge the sacredness of the self and the other.

Pope Francis’ encyclical on creation care, Laudato Si’: On Care for our Common Home is a timely response to the urgent environmental and social challenges of our time. This workshop introduces the basic themes of the encyclical and invites a deeper reflection on how we might integrate its message more deeply into our lives, teaching, and other ministries.

Presenter: Kyle T. Kramer is the Executive Director of the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center in Louisville, KY (www.earthandspiritcenter.org), an interfaith spirituality center offering programming in meditation, ecology, and social compassion.  He is the former director of graduate lay degree programs and spiritual formation for Saint Meinrad, a Benedictine monastery and school of theology.  Kyle and his family spent fifteen years as organic farmers and homesteaders in Spencer County, Indiana.  Kyle is a current columnist for St. Anthony Messenger magazine and a former columnist for America magazine, serves as a Catholic Climate Ambassador for the USCCB-sponsored Catholic Climate Covenant, and is the author of A Time to Plant: Life Lessons in Work, Prayer, and Dirt (Ave Maria Press, 2010).

Presenter: Jerry Galipeau is Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer for the J.S. Paluch Company and its music and liturgy division, World Library Publications, in Franklin Park, Illinois. Before coming to WLP, he served for fifteen years as Director of Liturgy and Music at parishes in Florida and Illinois.
He has presented keynotes and workshops throughout the United States and Canada on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, liturgical spirituality, ritual music, evangelization and adult spiritual formation. Past chair of the Board of Directors of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, Jerry has been a frequent team member for Forum’s institutes. A popular parish mission presenter and retreat leader, he earned the Doctor of Ministry with a concentration in liturgical studies from Catholic Theological Union at Chicago in 1999, where he is presently an adjunct faculty member.

In 1999, St. John Paul II addressed artists in a pastoral letter stating: “Society needs artists, just as it needs scientists, technicians, workers, professional people, witnesses of the faith, teachers, fathers and mothers, who ensure the growth of the person and the development of the community by means of that supreme art form which is “the art of education”.  This session will focus on the spirituality of art and artists in the Church and our ability to go deeper in prayer, uncovering the mysteries of God’s beauty in creation and presence through the gifts and talents of artists.  Focus will be paid toward icons, paintings, music, architecture, and poetry throughout the history of the Church.

How can we truly understand the rich tradition of Church?  It can seem overwhelming.  There are many familiar names, places, and events of the past but how did those people and events lead up to the Vatican II Church?  The first 3-hour session will focus on people and events surrounding the Reformation (1500’s) to the Anti-Catholic movement of the Know-Nothings in America (1850’s).  The second 3-hour session will continue with Vatican I (1860’s) concluding with the latest papal encyclical of Pope Francis, Laudato si’ (2015).  The complete session will present an overview of the philosophical, political, and religious developments of the last 500 years.  This workshop could be taken for 6 hours, or 3 hours for either session.
